Mapara Settlement.
Saturday was a red-Setter day in the Kahuwera block, it being the first occasion on which the settlers met in a body to discuss matters relative to the working of their holidrigs on a businesslike basis., and appoint a committee to represent them and their interests, on all future occasions. Although the Mapara settlement is close or. eight miles from one end to the other, quite a representative gathering was present, some it must be admitted getting there under difficulties, such as having to cross swamps, still in their original state. After the usual back-block yarns were spun the following committee was elected to represent the association:- - Messrs Helms (chairman), Mills, Robertson, Hack, Johnson, Garmson and McLean. The chairman in a few well-chosen words, outlined the working of the block, during the past twelve months, and gave one the impression of being a battler and right man in the right place. x'he most important item under discussion being the seed question it was unanimously decided to ask the board to try and let the settlers have theirs not later than the end of February, so as to ensure early sowing, and thus give the grass a chance to get a good hold before the severe weather sets in. Last season the settlers had to wait too long after the burn, before the grass seed was on hand, and thus lost their best chance of a good "take," especially on the fern country, which requires sowing straight away after burning. After some minor matters were discussed, afternoon tea and cakes was very kindly handed round by Mrs Larsen, and needless to say was done ample justice to, the general feeling going home being a better understanding among one another and hopes for a brighter future.
