WAITOMO COUNTY COUNCIL.

A mcftins: of th* l Waitomo County Council waa heUi at To Kuiti on Monday last. Th*>re were present: Councillors Hunt, Schota, Were. Johnston and Gregg. The Clerk pointed out that owing to tbe vacancy in toe cbair caused by the death of the late chairman. Mr Jer. Ormsby, the first doty of the Council was to elect a chirman as provided by the Counties Act. It was proposed by Cr Were, seconded by Cr Hunt, that Cr Scboles be elected chairman for the remainder of the present term. There was no other nomination for the position, and Cr Scboles was elected unanimously. Cr Scboles, in taking the chair, thanked the Council for the honour. —Condolence.— On the motion of Cr Hunt, seconded , by the Chairman, it was resolved that the Council adjourn until 1 p.m. out ;of respect to th«r late Chairman, and that a tetter of condolence be addressed to tbe widow. Mrs Jer. Ormsby. and the family. On resuming the minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. ~ Corref pondence. Mr H. Mine wrote with reference to another firm of solicitors being engaged to conduct Council work, and requesting an understanding with regard to his own petition.—lt was resolved to acknowledge receipt of the letter, and to state the matter would be consider ad. Mangacrino Loan. A letter was received from the Secretary of the Treasury stating that the Mangaorino loan of £IOOO was now available for expenditure. —Mairoa Thirds.— A letter was received from the Receiver of Land Revenues stating that the scheme for the expenditure of £416 3s 4d had been approved. —Municipal Site.— A letter was received from the Auckland Land Board intimating that Section 17, Te Kuiti Village Settlement, would be vested in the Council as a site for a municipal building. —Applications for Roads.— An application was received from W. Lorigan. as agent for C. J. Sloman. for a Governor's Warrant, authorising R. C. Jordan, of Te Kuiti, to survey a road from the Eastern boundary of Hapenoi No. 1 B. to give access to the various subdivisions of the block as shown on a plan attached. —Proposed by Cr. Hunt that the chief surveyor be applied to for a Governor's Warrant to survey a road as requested, on condition that tbe owner pay all expenses. Second dby Cr Were and carried.

The application of Mr Lever for a road to be dedicated giving access to Pukenoi, No. 2, from Waiteti road, under provisions of Section 101. Subsection D of the Public Works Act. 1908. was left in the hands of the Chairman and Engineer with power to act. The application of H. T. Anderson for a road to give access to Pukcnui No. 2, from the Awakino Road was left in the hands of the Chairman atil Engineer with power to act. —Slaughtering Licenses.— The application* of Messrs Cotter Bros and Mr Ch-istenscn with regard to slaughtering licenses were recommended for approval. -County Office.— It was proposed by Cr Hunt that tbe Public Works Department be applied to for the lease of the portion of the Government Buildings at Te Kuiti, which wilt be rendered vacant by the removal of the Roads Department officers, for the purpose of Council Chambers. The motion was seconded by Cr Johnston and carried. —Special Loan. On the motion of Cr Johnston, seconded by Cr Gregg, the Clerk was instructed to raise a loan of £SOO on a special rate of one penny farthing, as requested by W. Vicary and others. —Notice of Motion,— - Cr Were gave notice of motion that he would propose at the next meeting of the Council that the present agreement between the Council and the Clerk be terminated and the Council should take into consideration the advisability of appointing a Clerk to devote the whole of his time to the business of the County. On the motion of Cr. Were, seconded by Cr Johnston, it was decided that applications be called for the position of Clerk to the Couuncil at a salary of £2OO per annum, the council to find the office, and the Clerk to devote the whole of his time to County business. An amendment was proposed by the Chairman, seconded by Cr Hunt, that the salary to be £l5O. and that outside work be allowed. Tbe amendment was carried. —General Rate. - Cr Were gave notice of motion to move at next meeting that a General Rate of }d in the £ be struck for the year 1909-10. On the motion of Cr Hunt, seconded by Cr Gregg, the Chairman and Cr Johnston were empowered to advertise as widely as they thought fit for a Clerk, and also to frame conditions in connection with the engagement.
