Mr W. T. Jennings gave a political address here on Wednesday afternoon of last week. The weather was wet but upwards of 150 people attended. Mr G. Smith presided and introduced the candidate. The speaker, who was in excellent form was frequently applauded, and at the close of the address answered several questions. Mr D. Foster moved a hearty vote of thanks to the candidate for his address and continued confidence in him as representative. Mr G. A. McDonald seconded the motion which was carried with acclamation. Mr Jennings is certain to receive very solid support in this district.

Interest in the Rifle Club is being maintained, and members are putting in good practice on the range. The Matapuna representatives victory over the local men recently, when some really good shooting was done. A return match is talked of. Club shooting for trophies is now a popular pastime and considerable interest is being taken in the sport. On Saturday next the shooting trophy is to be a sheep and the club members are all cultivating a taste for mutton in anticipation of the event. The work here in connection with the new railway station is nearing completion and the place is wearing a greatly improved appearance. It is rumoured that the Railway Department is taking over the mill at the end of the present month. Hitherto the mill has been run by the Public Works Department.
