MAIROA.

_ The school social was held last Friday evening, and proved a great success. Favoured with beautiful and consequent good roads, and their families mustered strongly. The function took the form of a mixed social evening, and the programme, being contributed by both school children and adults, resulted in an extremely_ bright and varied entertainment, which everyone thoroughly enjoyed. Songs and reci--tations were relieved by children's games, and dancing, and abundant refreshments were supplied by the ladies. Mesdames Chestnut and Thorns, assisted by the other ladies, worked hard, and left nothing undone to.make the evening a success. Considerable amusement was occasioned by the cutting of Mrs Thorn's threedecker cake, and the_ search for the treasure hidden therein. The button was secured by a married man while a bachelor was the fortunate recipient of the coin. A collection was taken up during the evening in aid of the children's prize fund, an amount of nearly £3 being realised. It is intended to canvass for subscriptions to supplement the fund, and the prizes will be distributed before the school breaks up for the Christmas holidays. The committee is to be complimented upon its endeavours to provide amusement, and an incentive for the children to work, and to the members may be ascribed, in a large measure, the success of the entertainment. The district is looking well and grass is plentiful. A considerable area of bush has been felled during the season, and there is every prospect of good burns being obtained. The potato blight has made its appearance, but as most of the crops are well forward, the loss should not be as great as in past seasons. Shearing is in full swing and the clip in this district is expected to be well up to the average. The United Picnic to be held on Boxing Day is expected to be well supported in this district, and all the initial arrangements are well in hand.

A start has been made to metal the main road at the fourteen-mile peg, and material is being obtained from the Mairoa road. The portion being metalled is. a bad place in winter, and it is to be hoped the treatment will be effecacious.
