TAUMARUNUI.

The road to Rangaroa township was commenced to-day, after a long delay. At present the only building on the hill is the new police station, but when the road is completed, there will be several houses built there, as, up to the present, there has been no mode of reaching the township. Several sections have already been ploughed up, to get the ground in order, previous to building. The coach from Oio to Raurimu has been discontinued since yesterday, when the train ran right through to Raurimu. This will be a great saving in time, though tourists will miss the pretty drive through the bush. A coach service has been started through to Raetjjii, but as the roads are not very good, and the fare from Raurimu 15s single, I am afraid the traffic will be small. The members of The Church of England intend building a church in Taumarunui, and with that object in view, a strong committee of ladies and gentlemen has been formed, and also a ladies guild. The guild members are working hard for a bazaar to be held here in June next. On Wednesday the 19th inst., a variety entertainment will be held, to raise funds for the guild. All friends willing to assist, are requested to forward, either in goods or cash, to the local branch of the King Country Chronicle, when they will be duly acknowledged.

The inhabitants of Taumarunui are not despairing of getting a Board School established here, and another petition is being signed to the Board of Education. There are about sixty European children here, and it is quite time a Board School was built. The standard of the Native school is much below that of a Board School, despite the Minister's disclaimer. • Also, there is not the same discipline as in a European school, the children attending when they like.
