OBITUARY
MR J. G. GARRETT. Mr John George Garrett, who was born at Spring Creek, Blenheim, nearly 86 years ago, died at his home at Belfast on Monday. __Tho deceased was a son of the late Air and Airs J. Garrett, who arrived in New Zealand on board the “ Edward Thornhill” in 1858. Eighty-three years ago he arrived in Kaikoura with his parents on board the 1 ‘ Lyttelton, ” which was the first vessel to call at Kaikoura. The late Air Garrett owned flaxmills at Swan creek and Athelney, and later took up farming, but he was finallyengaged in sawmilling at Long creek andf the Puhi Puhi. Air Garrett was the contractor, with Air E. Kerr, for the removal of the Pier Hotel from the old wharf to its present site. This was accomplished with the aid of a traction engine. He also moved the old wharf shed to the new wharf. Air Garrett had many varied interests during his lifetime, but the one in which he took most interest was the Agricultural and Pastoral Association, of which he was a past president. The deceased was a keen exhibitor at shows, and he won distinction when he was awarded .a prize for oats at' the Panama Exposition. Racing also claimed the attention of Air Garrett, and he possessed several good horses, which jsvere raced at Kaikoura, Blenheim, and Christchurch. The deceased was a member of the .Kaikoura River Board, and was a Past Grand of the Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge. Air Garrett married* Miss Elizabeth Burland, by whom he is survived,', and there arp three daughters—Marie, Lucy, and Nancy-—of the marriage. Mr E. J. Garrett, of Churchill street, is a brother of the deceased, and the only surviving member of a family of five boys and two girls. The Funeral. Thpre was a large number of Kaikoura and ex-Kaikoura residents at the funeral, which took place at the Bromley lawn cemetery yesterday. The pall-bearers were Alessrs H. J. Hewson, J. W. Burland, C. C. KeehanT. H. O’Donnell, J. W. Laugesen, and V. Chapman (all of Kaikoura).
