KAIKOURA DAIRY CO.

SLIGHT DECREASE IN PRODUCTION DURING APRIL.

Although a slight decrease of one ton eight cwt was shown in the production for April this year compared with the output during April, 1946, the total increase for this season compared with the 1945-46 season has only been brought down to 24 tons. An amount of 36 tons 11 cwt of butter was produced at the factory last month. This was the information contained in the report presented by the manager (Air J. S. Aitken). The 67,792 pounds of butterfat received at the factory .during April had averaged 39.6 per cent. The cream grading report disclosed that 95.75 per cent, was assessed as finest, 4.05 per cent, first, and .2 per cent, second grade.

Directorate in Attendance,

The chairman (Air H. J. Hewson) presided at the monthly meeting of the directors of the company, and the following attended:—Afessrs L. C. AlcLeod, J. J. Harnett, H. F. Alackle, T. G. Smith, L. J. Kennedy, R. R. AlcRae, and the secretary (Mr C. A. Jensen). Leave of absence was granted Air E. J. E. Lawson. The manager (Air J. S. Aitken) is at present attending a course of instruction at Massey Agricultural College, it was reported.

Storage of Butter.

A total of 1341 boxes of butter, produced during last month, had been stored in the cool chamber at the factory for the Internal Alarketing Department.

Levelling of Yard.

It was reported to the directors that the levelling of the factory yard in preparation for concreting had been completed. A great deal of material had been shifted, and arrangements for its disposal made. Grading of Cream.

Owing to a misunderstanding, the grading of cream at the factory dur ing the first few days at the beginning of May had been made on the same basis as is usually the practice made each year commencing on June 1, wheu only two grades—first and second —are adjudged. The oversight had been discovered, and the normal grading schedule was in operation again. Suppliers will have their cream grading on the days in question rectified to the scale as follows:—First to finest, and second to first.

The company regretted that the assessment in only two grades was advanced one month in error. However, the readjustment would not penalise any supplier, said the chairman. Costing of Merchandise.

A proposal to have the merchandise at the factory costed had been made at a meeting of the directors some months ago, but the opportunity to carry it out had not presented itself. In response to the price of gumboots quoted by Air Smith, it was decided to write to a firm mentioned for a quote. The information supplied was that the article sold at the factory appeared to be greatly in excess of the price quoted by a source of supply conveyed by Air Smith.

That the enquiry be made by the secretary was proposed by the chairman and seconded by Air Harnett. Election to Finance Committee. The appointment of Air Smith to the finance committee was approved after nomination by Air AlcLeod, supported by Air Mackie. Office Building.

The chairman outlined negotiations with the Works Department and its assistant land purchase officer (Air L. E. Al. Grace), and detailed to the directors the position as it affected the company on the basis of the valuation mooted by the Government.

It was pointed out that the purpose for which the land was used should be taken into consideration. The department had made an offer in a letter presented.

On the motion of Alessrs Alackle and Kennedy it was decided to write and bring certain considerations of the company before the department. Election of Delegates.

Five delegates were elected for the National Dairy Association conference in Wellington as follows:—Afessrs Hewson, Harnett, Alackle, Smith, and Alcßac.

Alessrs Hewson, Kennedy, and AlcRae were appointed to represent the company at the Alar] borough Dairy Ward coiifrence in Blenheim.

Motion of Sympathy.

An expression of sympathy to the relatives of the late G. E. D. Palmer, who had beeiii a supplier to the factory, w r as made on the motion of the chairman, and members stood in silence as a gesture. It was decided to write a letter to the relatives conveying this sentiment.

Alterations to Residence.

The new washhouse had been erected, said the chairman, and he had gb cn the manager permission to renew the tubs, which had fallen into a state of disrepair. Air Smith proposed, and Air Alackle seconded, that the chairman’s action bo confirmed.

Office Assistant.

The secretary reported the resignation of Afiss N. Hansen as assistant in the company’s office, and that he had tentatively engaged an assistant in her place, but asked the directors permission to allow the new appointee to commence a few weeks before the departure of Aliss Hansen in order to become acquainted with the work. Approval of the secretary’s action in engaging the new assistant and of the arrangement suggested was c >nfirmed on the motion of Alessrs Harnett and »Smith.
