WAR ENTERING FINAL PHASE.
- _ '‘‘W NEV’ YC’K, August 7. 1 “Every day it is becoming more evident that the war has entered its final phase, at least in Europe,” says the New York Times in a leading article. “The vast structure of might, murder, and pillage erected by Hitler for world domination for the next 1000 years is beginning to crack in every joint, every front, and though the Allies’ main effort remains concentrated in Europe, the war in the Pacific has likewise so far advanced that the first cracks are beginning to appear in Japan.
“It may well be that this final phase will turn out the grimynest of all. Hitler, having cast off the last restraints, threatens not only to pull down all Europe in his own downfall, but also to unloose upon the Allied world a lot of horrible things. “The nearer victory approaches the more pressing peace problems become. The main responsibility for the future peace must, of course, rest on those nations with the greatest power to safeguard or disturb it; but the American people will not approve a system which divides the world among the major victors and compels small nations to make whatever terms they can with whatever big power is nearest to them. ”
