VON PAPEN LEAVES TURKEY.
LONDON, August 7. The German Ambassador to Turkey (von Papen) left Istanbul this evening for Germany. The Daily Telegraph’s correspondent in Ankara says that he saw von Papen leave Ankara an Friday for Germany under a Gestapo guard. “The Ambassador was hemmed in by police and Gestapo officials, who kept off photographers. He was rushed to a special coach. It was not a fine exit,” says the correspondent. The Ankara correspondent of The Times says: “A Turkish Foreign Office official accompanied von Papen to the Bulgarian frontier. Arrangements are also being made for the depature of German consuls. Thus the nests or espionage and fifth column activity in Istanbul, Smyrna, Adana, Alexandretta, and Trebizond will be eliminated. The total number of Germans residing in Turkey is just 'under 3000. Czechs and Jews have applied for permission to stay.”
