Allied submarines have been sinking Japanese ships at a rate better than two daily. The United States Navy announcement of July 29 that more Jap anese vessels had been sunk makes a total of 69 in July. The July sinkings raise to 823 the number of Japanese ships sunk, probably sunk, or damaged by American submarines. Definite sinkings total 671, including 53 warships. American submarine losses on operations during the war total 23. Nearly 6,000,000 United States servicemen are now overseas. This includes 4,000,000 in the Army and 1,566,000 in the Navy, the Marines, and the Coastguard. The Army still has available 3,700,000 officers and many of whom would be available for overseas duty, while the Navy, Marines, and Coastguard have another 900,000 in training or ready for duty.—Message from Washington.
