MEAT PRODUCTION BOARD.

LONG-TERM CONTRACT AND PRICE SCHEDULE. A considerable amount of time was spent at the last of the New Zealand Meat .Producers’ Board in discussing the proposed long-term meat contract with the United Kingdom, and also the new season’s schedule prices. A committee of the Board presented special reports on these subjects, and further remits from meetings of farmers were also taken into consideration.

Replying to the Board’s inquiry, the Marketing Department information regarding the balance at the credit of the Meat Stabilisation Account which is provided for in the agreement between the Farmers’ Federation and the Government, in connection with the Farm Products Stabilisation Account. The Board decided to ask for further details in respect of the information which had been supplied.

The Board had under consideration a special report on the supervision of grading which is carried out by the Board.

It was decided to join with the Dairy Board in responding to a request from the Dominion Federation of Farmers’ Veterinary Services,. for financial assistance by way of a grant to help in the initial stages of the present development of veterinary services, and also to share in a contribution towards the expenses of Professor I. Clunies Ross, Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Science at Sydney University, who is at present visiting New Zealand at the invitation of the Government (Under the plan adopted by the Veterinary Services Committee, representing the Government and the Meat and Dairy Boards, 14 bursars from New Zealand have already entered on their studies at Sydney University). Several grants were made to A. and P. Societies towards the prize money in chiller cattle classes at forthcoming shows. The Board desires to give every encouragement possible in developing the quality of our beef cattle, and is looking forward to the post-war conditions which will permit a resumption of the shipment of chilled beef from the Dominion.
