RED CROSS SOCIETY.

ANNUAL MEETING. The second annual general meeting of the Kaikoura Sub-centre of the Red Cross Society took place on Tuesday afternoon at St. Paul’s Hall, the President (Airs F. J. Monk) presiding over a moderate attendance. Apologies were received for the absence of Alcsdames F. Emms and Abraham Boyd. A telegram was received from Airs F. S. H. Warner (Lyttelton), wishing members a successful meeting. The President spoke of the departure of Mrs Warner, stating that she had been a staunch and energetic worker for the Red Cross, as well as carrying out the duties of secretary. It was decided to forward her a letter of appreciation and to have her name recorded on the minutes. Airs Alonk also referred to the early departure from Kaikoura of Airs P. Burgoyne, and on behalf of members wished her every happiness in her new sphere of action. Report and Balance-sheet. The acting-secretary (Mrs J. W. Anderson) presented the report and bal-ance-sheet. The report stated that in its second year of its existence a great deal of work had been done by the subcentre. Besides knitting all the wool supplied from Blenheim, members had undertaken to knit a regular supply for the Air Force relations. All through the winter a sewing circle had met weekly at the residence of Mrs Warner to make warm garments and rugs for children and adults in bombed areas in England. Included in these was a large quantity of baby garments. The, Soriety is grateful for the large contribution to the latter from Oaro members, and Lynton Downs members for a number of beautiful patch-work

quilts. The following is a list of articles forwarded during the year:—Pullovers 32, flannel coat 1, Balaclavas 3, bed socks 3 pairs, mittens 10 pairs, socks 2 1 pairs, cardigans 2, scarves 9, tray cloths 46, jug covers 157, table covers 2, handkerchiefs 11. Air Force Relations: Pullovers 18, gloves 9 pairs, Balaclavas 7, polo fronts 8, scarves 2, socks 8 pairs, mittens 6 pairs. Patriotic Fund: Alittens 44 pairs, hold-alls 28, scarves 50, Balaclavas 8, socks 3 pai rs. The Centre at Blenheim had been reorganised and the Executive Committee was now composed of a delegate from each sub-centre, with Airs Harvey (Blenheim) President, and Air G. Spence (Blenheim) Secretary, and Airs J. W. Anderson (Kaikoura) delegate. 'l’he Christchurch K>entre had notified the secretary when returned soldiers invalided home were arriving in Kaikoura, and arrangements were made by the sub-centre to meet them. Petrol and transport were supplied and gifts of cigarettes and fruit made. In spite of the increasing demands the funds of the sub-branch are well in hand. The balance-sheet was read and considered satisfactory, and the report and balance-sheet were adopted. Election of Officers. The following were elected officers for the ensuing year:—President, Airs F. J. Alonk; Vice-Presidents, Mesdamcs W. F. Perrin and N. R. Comer; Secretary, Airs G. Betten; Treosurer, Airs W. Carson; Trustees, Mesdames G. Betten and W. Carson; Committee: Mesdamcs J. W. Anderson, V. C. Hughes, W. J. Bevis, D. Sterritt, F. B. Sabiston, A. Alclver, J. C. Smith, A. B.

•Clark, E. H. Morris, Abraham Boyd, I. Scott, S. L. Evans, G. Church, and Aliss F. Freeman. General. A beautiful patchwork quilt made by members was on view and was greatly admired. The quilt is to be forwarded for use on a hospital ship. The President extended a welcome to Mrs J. AV. Anderson, who had been absent owing to illness, and on behalf of members presented her with a dainty bouquet. Mesdames E. A. Gale and A. Mclver were elected honorary members in appreciation of their valued services, Airs Mclver returning thanks. Mrs J. C. Smith thanked members on behalf of the Lady Galway Society for a gift of warm and suitable clothing. The President expressed the thanks of members to Airs Warner for the use of her home for sewing afternoons; Air J. L. Thornton for the use of his office as a depot; the East Coast Transport Co., Alessrs Newman Bros., the Presbyterian Women’s Guild, and the Rev. W. J. Bevis for the use of the schoolroom, to the Press for publicity, and to all who had rendered services to the Red Cross Society, also t-o the retiring officers.

Airs N. R. Comer generously offered to take charge of the wool for the making of garments for patriotic purposes. The depot will be open every Friday afternoon from 2 until 4 o’clock, where wool can be procured. An enthusiastic meeting concluded with a vote of thanks to the chair.
