The Rome correspondent of the London the French, British and Soviet negotiations are producing signs of great concern. Italy is alarmed at the possibility of war in northern Europe, in which she would be involved through her commitments to Germany. Significantly, several newspapers, while protesting that the axis Powers are impregnable, dwell on the disastrous results of a general war, especially to France. Undoubtedly Italy would welcome a peace initiative from an acceptable quarter. Air Roosevelt is ruled out but there is reason to believe that Italian diplomacy is taking soundings to discover whether a Government more aloof than the United States could be induced to undertake to relieve the tension by judicious mediation.
