OBITUARY

MRS CLARA GILLING. Kaikoura has lost another of its old and highly-respected residents in the person of Afrs Clara Gilling, who passed away at her* late residence, Beach Road, this morning after an illness extending over several weeks. The deceased. who had been in indifferent health for many years, was the seconnd daughter of the late Afr and Afrs Thomas Lyford. Born at Clarence Bridge, she came to live in Kaikoura at the age of nine years, and 57 years ago she married Air Benjamin Gilling and took up her resilience in her old home, which some years ago was burnt down, but was later replaced and where Afrs Gilling had lived until her death. The deceased, with her husband, followed farming, and for many years Afrs Gilling was a devoted and trustworthy midw’ife, loved and cherished by a wide circle of friends for her many kind actions to those less fortunate than herself. Tw’o sons, William and Benjamin, died in 1900 and 1902, respectively. The late Afrs Gilling is survived by six daughters—Afrs J. R„ Timms (Nelson), Afrs W. Gill (Kaikoura), Afrs E. Palmer (Christchurch), Afrs D. Cookerley (Timaru), Afrs F. C. Brown (Blenheim), and Mrs R. Gale (Christchurch). There are 21 grand-children and 14 great-grand-children. Afrs John Harnett, son. (Kaikoura) is a sister of the deceased, and Afr F. H. Lyford (Afangamaunu) and Afr T. Lyford (Auckland) are brothers. The funeral will leave her late residence, Beach Road, to-morrow, at 2 p.m. We join with our readers in extending heartfelt sympathy with the relatives in their sad loss.
