Robert Montgomery, star of MetroGold wyn-Mayer’s “ Piccadilly Jim,” made his first visit to Hollywood as a member of the crew of an oil tanker which docked at Los Angeles Harbour. The steel girders for the Conway Bridge have now arrived at the Public Works camp at Conway together with the big crane, and little time will be lost in the completion of the bridge linking up the South Island Main Trunk Line with Claverley. Arrangements have been finalised for the farmers’ ball, to be held, in the Suburban Hall on Friday night, and an enjoyable night’s entertainment is assured. Mr F. A fire caused by the spontaneous combustion of slack coal in the Morgan east section of the Liverpool State Coal Mine, Rewanui, near Greymouth, early on Thursday morning. It was decided by the meeting to adopt maroon as the colour of representative jerseys, and to provide the girls’ team with maroon identification aprons similar to those worn by city school girls. An enjoyable card evening took palce at the residence of Mrs N. R. Comer on Thursday last, when members of the Kaikoura Croquet Club and friends assm.bled for the purpose of securing funds in aid of the Club. The winners were Mrs Comer and Mr J. Monk, the consolation prizes going to Mrs E. Jorgensen and Mr P. Milne, who played off with Mr A. Gooch. A dainty supper was served and much appreciated.
