“NO EXCESSIVE DRINKING.’* CONDUCT PRAISED BY POLICE. R-ecently Air T. E. Maunsell, S.M., as chairman of the Wairau Licensing Committee, referred to reports of excessive drinking at Kaikoura by men engaged n the construction of the South Island Alain Trunk, and instructed the police to submit a report. On Friday the committee received a report from Constable McLennan, of Kaikoura, to the effect that no excessive drinking was occurring. “1 am very pleased to receive the report. It is most satisfactory and all doubts I had on the matter have been removed. T unreservedly accept the evidence of the constable,” said Mr Maunsell. The constable’s statement was to the effect that there was no excessive drinking among men employed on the railway construction wonks at Kaikoura, as far as he know. “I visit the hotels and patrol the township with Constable Abbott several nights each week up to a late hour; but so far we have had to speak only to one or two of the men, and these were not in a bad state. There have been no complaints from the camps about tho men drinking, and none of the men has been arrested for drunkenness. There are nearly 1000 mon now employed in this sub-district, and so far they are a fine lot, and give no trouble. There have been no complaints from residents in the district about the conduct of the men.”
