Friday marked the first anniversary of a notable event in the history of New Zealand—the return to office of , the first Labour Government, The Genera] Election of 1935, which took place on November 27, resulted in the return of 53 supporters of the Labour Party out of a total membership of the House of Representatives of 80. Shortly after the election the Government gained two more supporters, two Maori members who had been elected as followers of Ratana joining the Labour Party. Since Labour was returned to office there has been one byelection. Mr W. J. Jordan vacated the Manukau seat on his appointment as High Commissioner, and at the by-elec--1 ion Mr A. G. Osborne, another supporter of the Labour Party, was returned with a big majority.
