A dance will be held in the Drill Hall on Saturday night, under the supervision of the Kaikoura Goli Club, in honour of visiting footballers and golf players.

There was a good attendance at the fortnightly amusement evening in the Hapuku Hall. The ladies* prize was won by Miss S. Boyd, Mrs AV. Poharama being second. The mon’s prize was won by Mr N. Guthrie, Mr C. Tolchard being second.

An indication that the Government may this year ease the burden of unemployment taxation in some quarters, or else provide more relief, was given by the Hon. A. Hamilton (Minister of Employment), speaking in reply to Labour criticism in the House of Representatives. The Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, it is believed, declared at the caucus of the Coalition Party that he was anxious to assist the man on wages and would undertake to restore the second salary reduction as soon as the finances permitted. It is confidently expected that the restoration will be made before the end of the present session, and a largo number of members arc very pleased at the possibility. As far a can be gathered from lobby gossip, the reduction of the unemployment tax mentioned by the Hon. A. Hamilton is fairly sure, and it is suggested that taxation on the wages of working girls will be cut out altogether.

The weekly session of the Workers* Educational Association was held last evening at the residence of Air and Mrs E. J. Watts. The evening was devoted to the second reading of “St. Joan,** Air R. S. Williams conducting. Occasion was taken to say good-bye to Mr and Airs James Murray, As a token of esteem they were presented with a beautifully-bound book, and the best of wishes expressed for their future happiness. Dr. AV. G. Tood was elected to succeed Air Murray as leader of the Association. The next session will bo held at the residence of Air and Airs J. A. Johnston, when the subject will be Susan Glaspell’s one act play. Air AV. McD. Baker will be the leader.

Miss T. K. AVest, dental nurse in charge of the Hawarden area, will return to Hawarden on Saturday. Her next visit to Kaikoura will be in August. During the month of June Aliss AVest. gave attention to 278 teeth, 31 of which required extraction.

A meeting of the Kaikoura Town •School Committee was held hist evening, Air A. W. Barker presiding. Those present were: Alessrs F. Hobbs. H. AV. Rainey, J. A. Johnston, Andrew Stewart, and the Secretary (Mr R. E. Clark). Apologies for absence were received from Alessrs R. Stralil and J. A. Borthwick. Air Barker reported that the jflanet junior plough would be on hand at an early date. Owing to the prevalence of measles and influenza it was decided to postpone the visit of sports teams to Cheviot until July 20. The headmaster*s report stated that owing to sickness the school had to be closed for nine day during June, the attendance being under 70 per cent. The -dental nurse (Aliss West) was reported to be doing excellent work, and parents should And the clinic a great boon to the district. The septic tank had been completed, complimentary remarks having been passed by the inspector and others regarding the work done by the contractor. A vote of thanks was passed to Air Rainey for the gift, of a shed tor the care inker’s use. It was decided to inivte Air E. F. Healy, M.P., Air A. D. Brice and members of the Education Board to be present at the official opening of the clinic and the concert on July 28
