WOMEN’S INSTITUTE.

KAIKOURA BRANCH.

The monthly meeting of the Kaikoura branch of the Women’s Institute was held in St. Paul’s Hall on Tuesday last, Mrs N. R. Comer (President) presiding over a fair attendance. Correspondence and other business was dealt with. It was decided to hold the third birthday party in the Picture Theatre cn Tuesday, August 2, and that the August meeting be held on Thursday, August 7, and a welcome to be extended to Mrs W. Deans. The roll call “tlree useso of kerosene” was won by Mrs Wright, Mrs Comer being second. The competition, “home-made soap,” was won by Mrs Shannon, Mrs E. H. Morris and Miss L. Gordon being equal second. During the afternoon the President, on behalf of the members made a presentation to Mrs E. Kemeys who is shortly leaving Kaikoura and at the same time expressing regret at losing such an interesting and faithful woker from their midst and she wished the departing guest all prosperity and good health in the future. She then asked Mrs Kemeys to accept a silver teaspoon with the Institute monogram thereon. . Mrs Kemeys suitably replied, and thanked all members for their very dainty gift, saying that she had spent many happy hours at the Institute and sLesiucerely regretted leaving them all. The president desires that any member who was unable to forward their donation to the Hanson Pantry fund may leave same at her residence to be forwarded on. A dainty afternoon was provided by the hostesses Mesdames D. Jack, E. Kemeys and J. A. Johnston and much appreciated. The meeting closed in the usual way. A committee meeting will be held on Tuesday afternoon at the residence of Mrs Comer. CHEVIOT BRANCH. The monthly meeting of the Cheviot Women’s Institute was held in the Public Hall, Cheviot, Mrs E. G. Wood presiding over a good attendance of members and visitors from the Spotswood, Parnassus, and Gore Bay Institutes. A lecture on “Reforms in Medicine” was given by Dr. L. H. Marshall. It was decided to hold a card party and dance in aid of the institute funds in July. It was agreed to form an overseas link. A parcel of garments was made up to be forwarded to the Christchurch Unemployment Relic 4l Committee. Correspondence was received from the Institute of the Blind, about the sale of basketware, and it was agreed to assist by taking a crate for disposal. A motion of sympathy -was passed with the relatives of Mr A. Geeson. Competitions for the afternoon resulted as follows:—Vase of flowers: Miss F. Wilkinson 1, Mrs C. Dalgety 2. Hostesses competition: Mrs W. O. M. Lawry I, Mesdames E. P. Honcybone and R. Hill (equal) 2, Mrs R. Bailey 4 The hostesses were Mrs A. Elliott, and Misses K. Scott and L. Elliott. SPOTSWOOD BRANCH. The monthly meeting of the Spotswood Women’s Institute was held in the Spotswood Hall, Mrs T. Stevenson presiding over a good attendance of members. Arrangements were made for the Institute birthday party, which will take the form of a social evening and dance to be held on the second Tuesday in August. During the afternoon a thrift article competition was held and resulted as follows: Miss D. Wilkinson 1, Mrs T. Stevenson 2. Tbe hostesses competition was won by Mrs A. W. Leaman. The hostesses were Mesdames G. Kelly and A. C. Barnes and Miss M. Harrison. DOMETT BRANCH The monthly meeting of the Domett Women’s Institute was held in the Domett Hall, Mrs F. D. Childs presiding over a good attendance. Preliminary arrangements were made for the annual birthday party to be held in August, and it was decided to hold a euchre and dance in the evening. Competitions for the afternoon were won as follows: Vase of flowers: Mrs J. Daly 1, Mrs G. J. Crampton 2, Mrs H. Denton 3. Decorated pantry tin: Mrs G. J. Crampton 1, Mrs J. Daly 2, Mrs A. 8. Murray 3. Plate of pastry: Mrs S. Denton 1, Mrs A. S. Murray 2, Mesdames J. Daly and G. J. Crampton (equal) 3. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames P. O’Boyle and E. S. Miller.
