WOMEN’S INSTITUTE.

LYNTON DOWNS-CHARWELL FORKS BRANCH.

The monthly meeting of the Lyn ton Downs-Charw'ell Forks branch of tho Women’s Institute was held on May 3, nt the Charwell school, Mrs Roberton presiding over a large attendance of members.

Mrs H. Hare supplied the motto, “Just gather up the fragments of what is left and carry on.” The roll call, “The best penny-worth I know,” brought forth some humorous remarks; also the competition, “Questions and answers” caused a great deal of fun. A letter of a most interesting nature was read from a link in Scotland, outlining the activities of their Institute. The president also read an account of the good work the Country Women’s Association of Australia accomplish in aiding their less fortunate sisters in the back blocks in giving them a complete rest at the Seaside Cottage at Dealing Sydney. Airs J. E. Barker gave a demonstration of raffia work, which was interesting. A parcel of clothing was received from the Women’s Auxiliary D<*pot in Christchurch, and distributed amongst the members to make into useful garments. Airs H. Roberton was unanimously elected as a delegate to attend the annual conference in Wellington in July. Air H. Roberton very kindly contributed goods for the card evenings, •during the winter months, to aid the Institute funds. A “500” curd evening recently organised .by the Charwell members resulted in a substantial increase in the funds. A dainty afternoon tea was provided by tho hostesses—Mrs Hescott, Aliss Snushall, and Miss Tracy.

SPOTSWOOD BRANCH.

Tho Spotswood Branch of the Women ’s Institute held the second of a series of euchre evenings at the Spotswood Hall, but owing to the inclement weather there was only a moderate attendance. However, an enjoyable time was spent by those present. The prizes for the euchre were won by T. Stevenson and by Air A. Tho consolation prizes went tdfMrs C. F. Barnes and Mr B. Martin.* Music for the dance was played by Miss N. Fraser, with extras by Mrs T. Stevenson. Air G. Y. Upston was the ALC.
