Fencing, Puhi Puhi East Now Road, through Native Reserve: In accordance with your instructions, I have interviewed Mr Doyle with reference to carrying out the remainder of the work, and he assured me he- was prepared to meet, the Council in a fair way. If the Council will define the fence line on th<* west side of the road, Mr Doyle will then give details and price for the completion of the work. Waimanarara Stream: Plans and specifications for constructing two small groynes on the east side of this stream, where directed, have been prepared, and tenders called for the work. Cleaning Ditches: This contract is almost completed, only a few chains remaining to be run out. Tree-planting at South Bay: The fence for enclosing another three acres has been pegged out, and material for erecting the fence is being delivered. South Bay Road: The metalling contract to South Bay main road has been completed. Minor maintenance metal repairs have been carried out on the road to the Native settlement at South Bay. Ludstone Road: The contract for maintenance metal repairs on this road is finished. Patch metal repair work on Kowhai Road, from Kowhai Bridge going northwards on the Inland road, has been attended to, as directed. Plans and specifications are being prepared for new formation on Kahautara riverbed to Mr J. Boyd’s homestead. A new pipe culvert has been fixed in. position at Cooke’s timber yard, Beach Road. The large pipe culvert, crossing Beach Road from Brighton Street, has been opened, and the pipes that were blocked have been cleared. Maintenance metal repairs have been carried out on the Main North Road, from Hawthorne Road to McLeod’s Corner.

1 recommend you to consider the advisability of putting in a small pipe culvert to deal with the drainage from a cottage near the Star Office, on Beach Road. It was thought that the drainage from this house Mould go north to the culvert at Dalgety’s building, There is not sufficient fall for an earth channel, only 3in to the chain. A concrete channel, or a small pipe culvert, across the road ,is the only alternative. It Was agreed to put in a new drain. A new 9in pipe culvert is urgently required on the North Road, near Sandy Bay, the old timber culvert being rotten ami unworkable. To receive attention. Oaro: Workman’s private road, at Oaro, has been completed. Work on J. J. McGrath’s Road has boon executed as recommended. A new pipe culvert has been fixed in position on Grey’s Road. The fords in the stream have been put in order, some metalling run out. water tables cleaned, and water channels to carry storm water off the road. The metalling contract on Hawthorne and Mount Fyffe Road is under way. Puhi East New Road: Two gates have been supplied and fixed ?n position on the new fence through the Native Reserve, on the east, side of the road. Blue Duck Road: A new timber culvert, 3ft x 3ft, is urgently required at the north end of White’s Flat, that is, about three-quarters of a mile above Mr Douglas’s homestead, the old culvert being rotten, ami has fallen in. At this point the road is unsafe for ordinary traffic. Two smaller culverts, near the sawmill, require attention, one may have to be renewed. Three men are < mployed on this road, removing slips and effect-: ing repairs. The long spell of exceptionally wet weather has been most detrimental to this road. Good progress

has been made with repair work at the north end of this road. Maintenance metal is urgently required on Postman’s Road, between Alt. Fyffe Road and Sandy Creek. Gray’s Lane. Up to date this road : much too v. ci to think of carting nieiai to effect repairs. Tn any case, 25 yards would be useless under present conditions. About £7 will give you 50 cubic yards and make a good job, that is, when the road dries up. On 20th August the South Bay :nctai contract was completed, and arrangements were n ude for those teams to go to Waiau Road and McGregor’s Rua<l. The Government Overseer (Mr , A . /barker) engaged these teams, and ihov are now working on the South Roe.d.J may add that Mr I. McGregor, at Greenburn, has given authority for the men <o • ami’ in his hut, ami also provides a paddock for the horses. With reference to G. Barker’s ;hre-two-horse teams that were working cp the North Road, Mr Barker ha./’jus. completed his metal contract on I.ud stone Road, and has applied for a fortnight or three weeks to put in his crops t have agreed to this. When the work i. completed Mr Barker will be pleased i< go out again with the teams in any direction required. With regard to works being executed on Blue Duck Road, there is a number of bad points that require widening, j think some of this work may be carried mt. and charged to the grant of ;'?2 for £l. It will be necessary to peg out this new work, ami keep the time sonarati from the ordinary surfacing anW.- m-.v al of slips, etc.
