MP U JOHN POW. The late Mr John Pow, of li Fern iohirst,’ ’■ who died oa Saturday, 29th April, was born at Jedburgh, Scotland, about 82 years ago, and 'was a townsman of the late Mr George Rtitherfordy the father of the family of that name, alfeo of the late Mr William Douglas, of Hawera, ;iind of MeSsr John and Robert Tinline. Mr Pow reached Now Zealand neafly GO years since accompanied by -who’ as a daughter of the late Mt Robert Tinline, and settled with Mr Tinline at “Forniehirst,” where their names had become a household word. Mrs Pow predeeoased her husband by-about. twenty years. It may be said with all sincerity these were a noble couple, and Mr Pow’s name is honoured throughout the Kaikoura and «Amuri districts as a man of sterling worth 4(nd integrity. He had during the last 25 yUars been-closely associated with the public life of Kaikoura, both as a Councillor and as* a member of the Agricultural and Pastoral Association. This latter body owes much to his kindly presence and financial assistance, ahd although ho was a life member, he never forgot, to give his “specials,” and the Association will-yegrct Ms demise. The late Mr Pow leaves a grown-up family, these being Mrs Gunn (relict of the late Dr Gunn), Mrs Mounsey (wife of Mr Robert Mounsey, of Wharanui School, Christchurch), and Mr ,Gavin Janies Po>, ol‘ “ Ferniehirst, ’ ’ together with several grandchildren, to whom we tender our deepest sympathy. To know Mr Pow wafcj a pleasure, and his keen grip agricultural and pastoral matters, as well, as his readiness to-give advice upon •such questions, many will assuredly miss him.-. While he had lived so many years In sTew Zealand, it was remarkable how closely he had retained his Scottish accent, and this was a pleasing trait in the man, who was a true son of. Scotland—bright, keen, and of a happy, breezy mannerism. When Mi- Pow first went to ”Ferniehirst” it was a far-out back-place, and very inaccessible, but many a traveller hap had cause to rememb«, kindly welcome given by thb “Ferniehirst” household.- He has not. enjoyed the best of health for the last - four or five years, and now he has gone to that bourne, whence no traveller returns, full of years, and his death is regretted by a large circle of friends. The funeral is taking place at Waiau toda/. *
