The Recent Fires
The fire In Broadway this morning, following so soon after ihe destruction of the Drill Hall, has caused considerable uneasiness among residents, and there is a general consensus of opinion that a night watchman must again he re varied lr>, or that the police bkept on duty until the early hours ot the morning. The circumstances attending the outbreak of boih fires this week, undoubtedly lead to suspicions, and we hope that some ac'ion will be takeu in the matter of endeavouring to probe Ihe outbreaks ot fire to the greatest poss ble point. The position of nightwatchman has remained unfilled since the death of Mr Joseph Turner, in May 19-7 and the demands ot ratepayers that their properly have better protection must be recognised by the local governing authority. We do not wish to pose as alarmists but the uucerta'uty i n respect to the safely of property is a matter that should be dealt with at the earliest possible moment.
