THE STAND DOWN WEEK. CHANGE DATING FROM MAY L WELLINGTON, Last Night. Abolition of the stand down week in unemployment relief, with the intention that the registered unemployed should be provided ae far as available with funds to permit work mad relief every week, was announced tonight hr the Minister of Unemployment, Mr Coates. The change will date from May let. Hitherto, all unemployed have stood down one week in each four weahly period and a considerable burden has been thrown on Hospital Boards In that week. There will be no attempt to standardise conditions and methods of administering relief in all places. Mr Coatee said a certain amount of latitude will bo allowed in making local arrangements to suit local needs. The weekly basis of payment, which will be adjusted according to requirement*. will be: Single men 2 days' work 15s, married men without children 2} days’ work £1 sa, with one child 3 days' work £ 1 10a two children 31 days’ work £1 16a, three or more children 4 days’ work £2.
