PREVENTING ITS COLLAPSE. SUSPENSION OF GOU) STANDAKD. (United Press Assn—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) SANTIAGO (Chile), April 19. In an effort to prevent the whole sale collapse of currency, Congress passed a measure officially suspending the gold standard. Although a virtual non-gold standard existed for some time, the official rate of the peso is twelve cents. American gold, however, continued 44 b00t-legging’ * and the currency was forced downward. It is believed the value has now dropped to five cents.
