(Per Press Association.) DISTRESSING PATALTTY. 1 RAILWAY PORTER’S LITTLE SON. — RUN OVER BY A TRUCK. TXVKRCAROIT.T-, I.aat Night. A distressing fatality occurred at Centre Bush railway station yesterday afternoon, when Rornikl George Whelan, the two-year-old son of a railway porter stationed there, received fatal injuries through being run over by a truck in the station yard. Deceased, with two elder brothers, was playing in the yard while the father and two other men were engaged in moving some loaded trucks. One was allowed to go free and they were about to push the other trucks in the same direction when one of the elder boys called out that Ronuld was under the truck. Deceased was discovered with a truck wheel over tho lower portion of the body. Medical aid was summoned, but the boy died shortly afterwards. An inquest is being held this afternoon. i K 'is G. A sad bathing fatality occurred at Day’s Bay at about 4 o’clock on Saturday afternoon, when James Watson, aged 24, believed to have been boarding at Brooklyn, lost his life. It seems that Watson, while bathing in company with severul companions, got into difficulties in the. heavy surf, which was running at the time. Hia plight was soon noticed and his friends went to his assistance and had almost reached the shore, when a large wave caused them to leave hold and Watson was carried away. Dragging operations were commenced immediately and after a short time, the body was found. Curiously enough, death had so changed his features that Watson’s friends did not recognise him for some time after. He was brought ashore and* artificial respiration was applied without avail and Dr Shand could only pronounce lifo extinct. i Deceased, who had no relatives in New Zealand, came out from Ireland ?,l years <ago.
