At Ashburton to-day, Wm. Porter was fined £SO and costs for sly-grog selling.

The privileges for the Brass Band, Contest will be sold by Messrs McMahon and Lee to-morrow at 3 p.m when the same firm will sell a large quantity of fruit and a consignment of butter.

The Collector of Customs at Hokitika received the following telegram to-day from the signalman at Okura : " Kauri centre board whaleboat 18. feet Ion?, 7 ft 6 inches beam, painted white inside, red to water line, and white above the outside, was found stranded at Brawn's Refuge, South Barn Bay."—Press wire.

In the S.M. Court, Christchurch to-day Mr Beswick, on behalf of the Law Society, gave an emphatic denial to a statement made by a barrister the previous day that it was a common practice for solicitors to accept a commission from land agents on business put through the agents' hands by them. All the lawyers in Court supported the denial.—Press wire.

A meeting of the Agricultural and iPastoral Association was held to-day, Mr I. Patterson presiding. The programme was adopted. It was decided to arrange with the Jockey Club for a suitable date for the ground. It was also decided to interview the Commissioner of Lands with a view of getting an endowment for the Association. This was all the business.
