Per Press Asflociatlqn.-rGopyrlghta Pebth, March 4 A constable in charge at the lockup, by wading up to his armpits, re leased two prisoners who would otherwise have been drowned. ■ Daylight presented a remarkable picture streets. Everywhere were littered with debris, dead dogs and sheep and thousands of fowls. Most of the house were filled with mud and uninhabitable whilst the contents Were largely destroyed. The business people are the greatest losers as their stocks are in ruins. The damage is estimated at from Li 0,000 to Li 5,000.
the Mayor has opened a relief fund. The railway and telegraphic •ervices are disorganised and many washaways are recorded. At York the storm lasted two hours. The hailstones were as large as pigeons' eggs. The main street was flooded. The swingbridge was partially washed away. Miles of lencing were destroyed. Great damage was done to property whilst the orchards throughout the district were devastated.
At Kalgoolie, three men were riding in a dray when one named Swift was struck dead by lightning. The others received a serere shock. Melbourne, March 4
Unusually severe thunderstorms are reported in various districts. Floods and monster hailstorms caused extensive damage.
