Presented to the subscribers at the Annual Meeting held on the 21st. of April 1898. Your committee have to report that during the year ended March 31st. the Library has been large y supported by the subscribers, as 2,337 Works haye been in circulation, besides Magazines, and the Illustrated Papers, and your Committee would recommend that their successors should order from Edinburg, as soon as possible cut of the Funds in hand (£125 of Mr David Ziman's donation), such Works of Travel and Fiction, published since the last order, say to the extent of 1 £56, leaving the balance for future orders, so a to keep up the supply to the Library in introducing latest j Works. A reqeisition from subscribrs was received in February last, asking for extensibu of issue of New Books and other Privileges connected with the Reading Room. As the matter was of some importance, and infringed,, somewhat^if?Pgn^the|^tial Libraries, your Committeethonght it best to defer the consideration of the Requisition to the Subscribers at their Annual Meeting in April so as to guide their successors in the matter. To assist the funds of the Society, the members of the Reefton Dramatic Club very kindly gave an entertainment in October last, which resulted in a cheque for £10 10s being handed to the Treasurer, and the best thanks of the Subscribers are due to Mr and Mrs Rathbone and other members of the Club for their generous assistance to the Committee.* The late Secretary, Mr W. Austin, resigned his position on the Committee very much to the regret of the other members of Committee. Mr A. J. Thompson was elected to fill his place on the Committee, and Mr W. Hindmarsh was appointed to fill the vacancy of Honorary Secretary occasioned by Mr Austin's retirement. In June last the Librarian, Mr H. Lewis, resigned his position, which was accepted with much regret, and your Committee must here testify to the ability and attention j displayed by Mr H. Lewis in the ! discharge of the many duties connected with the position of librarian. Owing to the falling off of subscribers, your Committee came to the decision to dispense with the services of a librarian and to perform the duties themselves until the funds were ia such a position as to warrant the appointment of a librarian. In the meantime Miss Eveline Heslop was appointed to the charge of the Reading Room and has performed her connected therewith to the of the Committee.* Your committee are sorry to see that the Reading Room, which has been comfortably furnished, and kept well Supplied with Reading matter, in 'the shape of magazines, weekly and daily papers, is not patronized as ii should be In conclusion your committee beg to refer to the Treasurer's Balance Sheet which shows as follows.— KfiCKxPTS.
