*___ We are pleased to state that Mr Tron< nery, County Chairman, who has been seriously ill, is now improving. , Another old identity baa passed away to bis long borne, in the person of Mr Robert Savage, who died recently in the Wftihi district Auckland. Yesterday William Barnes appeared before P. Q. Caples, Esq. J. P. for neglecting to provide for the support of his illegitinate child. The accused was remanded to Grey mouth. A bag containing £500 in sovereigns and £200 in half-soverigns was left in a London cab the other day by a gentleman whs had been driven to Waterloo Station. The cabman took the bag to the police station, and the ownor, on recovering possession of the sanife, rewarded the cabman with £75. \Vo understand that the Grey Valley Coal and Coal Creek Companies have amalgamated, the Government having, it is said given its consent to the arrange j ment. The work on the new lino will be proceeded with rapidly, and tenders will likely be called for the bridge in the course ot a week or so. Mr Martin Kennedy ia to be Managing Director of ♦he new mine. R. Lees, prospector, reports as follows from the Merrijigs district :-I havo nothing payable as yet, although the country 1 have been over has many, likely features ; I lately came across a new body of clea« stone three feet in thickness, but after cutting it in several places, gave it up as it was barren where ever I could get at it. I intend moving on to the Big River range soon. C. Clifford reports from Lary's way : Found some gold-bearing quartz in two different places, but nothing payable as yet. There are several likely pla«es that I know of which I intend prospecting directly.
