Yesterday William Barnes appeared before P. Q. Caples, Esq. J. P. for neglecting to provide for the support of his illegitinate child. The accused was remanded to Grey mouth. A bag containing £500 in sovereigns and £200 in half-soverigns was left in a London cab the other day by a gentleman whs had been driven to Waterloo Station. The cabman took the bag to the police station, and the ownor, on recovering possession of the sanife, rewarded the cabman with £75. \Vo understand that the Grey Valley Coal and Coal Creek Companies have amalgamated, the Government having, it is said given its consent to the arrange j ment. The work on the new lino will be proceeded with rapidly, and tenders will likely be called for the bridge in the course ot a week or so. Mr Martin Kennedy ia to be Managing Director of ♦he new mine.
