[To the Editor]. Sib, — Kindly alldw me spacfe in your columns to say a few words in auswer to a letter which appeared in the " Guardian " of Wednesday last. " Cosmopolitan " reminds us that he has oDly recently arrived in Keefton ; of that I am quite satisfied. He begins by calling our attention to the great speed at which vehicles are driven arouud corners; Surely a nun who has the welfare of Beeftonites bo much at heart would have taken the trouble to enquire whether oi not there existed a bye-law to rid U9 of this nuisance. The next thing he calls attention to ia tho crowds of foui-rmuilu-d loafeis as he terms them, standing at the street corners. •' Cos. mopo itan " must have generated in one of the Siberian mines and after an aerial tour dropped iv our midst, for had he been in many of our New Zealand towns he would not notice trifles
of this sort. He surely imagines that the police are celestial beings, that they have only to speak to have the effect of scattering young men old enough to be of use in the football field. Oh no! They have more sense) The Salvation Army, I think, might, take " Cosmopolitan's " hint. The next place ho finds his way to i 9 the public houses. Poor fellow ! ho apoaks feelingly. When lit; calls attention to the fact that the hotels sell liquor after hours, can (< Cosmopolitan " nan.fi one town. in New Zealand where this particular section of ih«: Licensing Act is not. violated ? Is there anything 60 noticeably glaring in the manner in which this section- of the Act is. treated in R<-efto;i?. Next, our " Cosmopolitau " friend, who, by the way, is like the Wandering Jew, attacks the poor Heat lien Chioee, .who live in a r«mo'«.«}'pt. Eve:) they cal'uotr escape him. . He. npjifars .to have*~vx^ibi^ci' Tfiir I^etTo;r ed'rh&rs pretty we.'l during his short stay. I am, &c, Pro Patbia. Reef ton, 10th April, 1891.
