DEATH OF MR. GALLAGHER.

(From the Westport Times.) A general feeling of genuine sorrow was caused throughout the town this afternoon by the newa of the unexpected death of Mr Timothy Gallagher of the firm of Gallagher Bros., merchants. About a week ago he caught a cold, and on Friday night last he was compelled to take to his bed. During the week his condition varied, but last night he showed improvement, and no serious result was feared. To day, however, congestion of the lungs set in at 1 p.m. it was deemed necessary to telegraph for his brothers from Cronadun, and at 2 p.m. he passed away. The sad news spread rapidly through the town, and was received everywhere with expressions of regret. The deceased leaves a widow and young family of eight children to mourn their irreparable loss, and they have the sympathy of the entire community. The late Mr Gallagher was one of those useful citizens whom we can ill afford to lose. He was amongst the earliest settlers in the Bnller district having been in business in Addison's Flat in the year 1857. In 1869 he was elected to represent the Buller constituency in Parliament, and was during his term the youngest member in the House. Mr Gallagher was the second member for the district, (Mr Bontley being the first.) From this district the deceased removed upcountry and during his residence there he occupied a seat in the Inangahua County Council, besides other public positions. Mr Gallagher went from Eeefton to Canterbury, and carried on a large business at Kaiapoi, where he assisted in municipal government. Ho returned to "Westport some three years ago and quickly obtained a good business footing. Shortly after his arrival hero the Government added his name to the Commission of the Peace, and subsequently he was appointed to membership of the Westport Harbor Board. He also showed his anxiety for the improvement of the town in the position of Chairman in the Vigilance Committee. The deceased was a native of County Donegal, Ireland, and was about 48 years of age.
