EAST AND WEST COAST RAILWAY.
(To the Editor, Inangahua Times.) 5i Sib.— l observe in the Grey River irgus of the 27th inst. that the Mayor of ti Wellington has issued a circular to the ft nembers of the House of Representatives, c< igainst diverting the sum of £180,000, p cheduled in the Loan Act for the con- , truction of that portion of the main r runk line northwards from the Hurunui o the Red Post, towards the construction c if part of the East and West Coast Rail- ea my between Hokitika and Christchurch. w
As it 13 well known that neither the Canterbury nor the Reeftou Railway I«W«e» advocated a communication between the twu -coasts: by this route, inascentre of the coaWdck district, but on the oontmry^ & • TJ tt J" HUrUnui Via the A <*» Saddle erulent that that gentlemen either doesnot an derst rai dthe Bituat8 ituat. i on,orißUßin g purpoeeaby keeping tlm advocated ,n the back ground. The extension of the Hbrfben trunk fine from the Hurunm to the red post, for which -^catedL^hlle of the Loan Act, is up. to- that point con. mon to both the Northern trunk eK te n , sion, and the East and West Coast Railway via the Ada Saddle to Reefton and Greymouth, and therefore cannot by anjr * interpretation be called a misappropriation, nor can the construction of this part of the line to 'the red post be considered other than a part of thtf main line- , sucS^u the Loan .Act. The OB.nte&uty-$> and Reefton Railway Leagues a& perfectly well aware that the ntapay goscheduled be .appropriated to the eonstrnction of a^fine of railway^haring for extension could branch off, or more properly speaking connect with the East and West Coast Railway, via the Ada Saddle at the head, of the Marttia Plains. I think the members of the House of Repre sentatives are not likely to run counter to the wishes or fears of the worthy Mayor in this matter, and further that ho will have the hearty support of theCanterbury and Reefton Railway Leagues. I am &c., Railway League.
