SOUTHERN MINING NEWS.

Hokitika Guardian.

Humphrey's Gully, May 18,

This part of the district now, like other mining parts of the Coast, is at a stand for want of water; and those who have no timbering to do are idle. Those of Noble's old claim are tho only parlies who can do any work, if 1 except O'Neil and his men, who can only la-.}) 0-4 pay.

I have the same to say of Boucher's Gully and Gentle Annie. At the latter place the men who have no better to do are putting up huts for winter. The latest news is exceedingly grstifying, the manager of the Eoss j Gold Mining Company having telegraphed on Saturday as follows: — ••Think we are just getting to fifth bottom. Prospect a quarter of a pennyweight to the dish. Improving as we go down." Later in the day it was reported that three fee"t of wash had been gone through, and the prospects taken out gave a better average than that first telegraphed. After going through three feet the hands commenced slabbing up. This news was the means of creating some stir in the sharemarket, and one or two parcels of paid up scrip in the new company just formed, called the Boss United Gold Mining Company, with a capital of £150,000 in £1 shares, changed hands at 20s, at which price there are several buyers. The Company's shaft is now sunk to a depth of 260 ft, and the next bottom to be met with is on the famed Cassius loveL
