♦ : (from our own correspondent.) Balclutha, 15. Mr. James Rutherford, M.H.B. for Bruce, died at his residence, Sunimerville, Kaitangata, this afternoon. He was in good health a week ago, but caught a jold, which brought On congestion of the lungs. DunbdiN, 17. Mr. Henry Clark, County Chairman, will be a candidate for the Bruce seat. A telegram has been received from Mr. Proudfoot at Sydney that his horse Sir Modred arrived by the Hauroto safely, after a severe passage. Of the lot of 50 draught horses shipped from Lyttelton 16 were killed on the voyage. The daily correspondent at Roxborough telegraphs that the body of a man has been found at the creek between Moa Flat and Pomahaka River, in the Tivioi It is stated that
the body was covered with stones, and the head apparently been chopped* off and placed near the feet It is believed that the man was murdered, and his clothes burned. There is still a por- . tion of flesh adhering to the body, and from the appearance of the body it is surmised an attempt was made to burn it. The police have gone to the spot Detective Bain continues an investigation the Chinese made, to which no clue has yet been found. At Tapanui to-day Joseph Louth was charged with misappropriation of money while employed as stationmaster at Tapanui. The case has proceeded all day. The prisoner was committed for trial on three charges' of embezzlement. He reserved defence. Wellington, 17. The Ministers held a very lengthy Cabinet Counoil to-day, and a meeting of the Executive Council also took place, the Premier presiding. Good accounts continue to come in from all the Native districts. ' The progress of the settlement on the West Coast has been most favorably reported on by the Royal . Commissioner, Sir William Fox, who is now in Wellington. ; A woman named Schuler was sentenced to-day to seven days for larceny of a rug, and her daughter, aged thirteen, will be prosecuted for perjury in connection with the caseJ . Auckland, 16. Tawhaio and 100 mounted followers have left Alexandra on a visit to Taurahga. The Governor and Vice Regal party returned to-day by the Hinemoa, from a trip among the islands in the HaurakiGulf. The City Council has decided to purchase the Army and Navy Hotel, and the adjoining allotments, for the site of the Town Hall. Councillor Moore, solicitor, protested that the Counoil had exceeded its powers. During the Hinemoa's trip yesterday, Kawau was visited, and: Sir George Grey entertained His Excellency. 17, The Clptaln of the Rangitiki reports, that while in the Bay of Biscay he picked up two Chinese seamen, belonging to the vessel Kenmuir Castle, which foundered on the 2nd February last. Tne Chinese who were on a raft, stated, that three of their companions had. dropped off from cold and exposure, they also stated, that only one boat got clear of the ship. On the Bth- of February, the Rangitiki rescued the Captain and mate, and 5 hands of a dismasted schooner named the Mary Agatha, bound from Newport to Guagra, Bouth America. , ■■ , ■ 1 1 ■■ i i . - '
