THE POLL ON MONDAY.

(To the Editor, Inanoahua Times.) Sib,— l am not going to allow this; election to come atid end without having a word to say as to' which candidate myself and my fellow workmen ought to vote for, and as I am no speaker, but merely a miner, I* will express myself through the Press. The Shawite's say Wakefield is a clever fellow, that he is full of oratory, but that it is the result of experience. Now mates, this is true, he has the oratory, and he has the experience.. He is one of those kind of politicians that When he meets his colleagues in the House. of Parliament, and has a. subject to discuss whichaffects every nian or miner in this district, he is ready with his experience, cleverness, and far-sighted-ness, combined with determination of purpose, to compel the opposing members of the House to yield to his demands on our behalf, and you must all khor, froni TSmcue theeubjpet, that he wiwt he put . down. He is purely a politician, and as such, will fight for our wants, and you may depend upon it he will get them, because he has the command, and hiß principle is too high to .be bribed or bought over i y the Government — an act j that in itself would fad to secure for us i what we wanted. It is not a knowledge of the district that is so much wanted in a member' of Parliament, as the ability to defend-our sufferages. Mr Wakefield has this ability, the knowledge of the district he can soon acquire, and it is cfar fault if he is not posted up upon all matters connected with our district, so that he will be thoroughly conversant with our wants at all times. All the leading people of the j district intend to keep our member posted I up. So all we want is the ability, and we have it in Mr Wakefield. This gentleman has made a lasting name for himself, which will alway b add to his popularity and illustriousness, for having fought bravely for the constituents he has repre sented in other electorates, never flinching one inch from his demands for their welfare, until he actually obtained for them what they wanted, and now that he is likely to become our member, he will give his entire attention to our wants, and fight for them until he gets them. Mr Wakefield is a man who possesses a temperate and sensative feeling for the welfare of the hard-work-ing and industrious man, and I have ic from his own lips that he intends to do, and will do, all that lies in his power for their comfort and interests generally — not for a month or two—but continuously, and that he feels sure of success. With regard to Mr. Shaw, I am very doubtful.' I- do not like the idea of putting a lawyer, into Parliament— --one or two is necessary, no doubt — but -there are several there . already, and we don't want any more. It; is through the practice of returning so many lawyers to the House of Parliament that we are at this present moment suffering from hardship. They are, as a rule, hard-hearted, moneygrabbing people, who care for naught but the..nerquisites; that may fall in. their.way in the shape pf what w generally citfed Sickings, and I take it for granted that Ir. Shaw would' not be at all particular about grabbing all he could get, while, at the same time, he would be neglecting our interests. It is not possible for Mr. Shaw to do what he promises. He cannot do it, and it is all bunkum. I never knew a candidate who made such lavish promises give satisfaction to his constituents. I therefore doubt him very much, and intend, as a hard-working honest man, to give , my vote to Mr. Wakefield, who is an honest man also. -I am, &c., Htberviaut Boatman's, May 10th, 1883. _^ : • . £ • .
