THE DEATH OF BRIGHAM YOUNG.
Tho following particulars of the death, funeral, and succession of BriKliam Young, 1 received by tho Snn Francisco mail, were specially telegraphed to the Dunedin " Star" :— Bri K ]mm Young's death wns very sudden arid unexpected. l»c bnrjy lay m - State until September 2id in thfl great Tabernacle. During the nii?ht of the Ut the building wns open and was crowded ; special trains poured in from all parts bringing thousands to tho funeral. The obsequies began afc 11 o'clock on the 2nd, the tabernacle being densley crowded. Immediately near the coffin were ranged tho four surviving brothers nnd family of the deceased, also tea of fcno twelve apostles. At least 30,000 were present inside and outside the building. The apostles delivered panegyrics of a flattering character. The service lasted until two o'clock, when the coffin was closed and carried to tho grave, ten of*the apostles acting as pall-beHrers. Tho I body was deposited in the vault at three o'clock. This is so constructed that when closed no* strne can be removed. The rites were conducted in strict accordance with the directions left by the deceased, who particularly desired that the coffin migkt be roomy and that his friend* would wear no crape. The property left by him amounts to two million dollars, which is equally divided among his wives and children. Tlie succession was eagerly discussed. Public opinion ran on the three leaders among tbe twelve npos'les, Jno. W. Young, and one of the sons of Joseph Smith. On September 10th the twelve apostles settled the qupstion by issuing theepistle'claiming a releiation from God, who had appointed them to take charge of the Church without any election nf a new prophet. Jim Taylor, tlifi first apostle is virtually head .of the Mormon Church. A committee was appointed fo manage the financial affairs until October <6th when the semi-annual Church conference will be held and trustees in trust ■elected. Two of the twelve apostles, Oscar Pratt and Joseph S. Smith, are in Europe, but will retury to Utah imme •diately*
