Massey s Challenge Accepted WILFORD PUBLISHES AN INCRIMINATING LETTER T. M. Wilford having stated that the appointment .of Public Service Commissioners had not done awax with "Political Pull" and had merely created a "corner" in patronage for the Government, Premier Massey at his Lower Hutt meeting on Thursday denied the accusation that he had written certain letters and he challenged T.M. Wilford to produce and publish'a single letter and to cease stowing them in corners. One of the letters referred to was—by a coincidence—read by T. M. Wilford at his Upper Hutt meeting on the same evening as the Premier at Lower Huit challenged the candidate to publish. Three letters signed "W. F. Massey" were verified as genuine by P. Robertson, Chairman.of the Uftper Hutt Town Board, who declared that each was signed by the Premier. One of the letters—the one read to the.meeting—was laid on the table by T. M. Wilford for anyone to examine, and in reply to the Premier's Lower Hutt challenge is, with the candidate's approval, published in the "Independent". Lest the Premier might object to the letter being showa "in a corner" if we published it in the ordinary way, we give it a special position so it cannot escape notice. The other two letters will receive siniiral treatment when the candidate makes, the contents public. ■ Here is Letter No. 1., certified to l>y the Chairman of the Upper Hutt Town Board : PRIME MINISTER'S OFFICE. • Wellington, 22nd January,'l9l4. Dear Sir: I duly received your letter of 18th ultimo regarding your] application for re-employment as a gardener in Parliament Grounds. I have noted your representations in support of the request, and am bringing your case before the Public Service Commissioners for inquiry. ■', ' Yours Faithfully, W.F. MASSEY. Mr.F.Deßosa, Melling Street, Lower Hutt. Wellington. (True Copy-P. Robertson, Chairman, 26/11/14)
