TRESPASSING PIGS
NO RECOMMENDATION FEDERATED MEET No recommendation as to increasing the penalties provided' for trespassing pigs was made by the Auckland provincial executive of Federated Farmers, said Mr S. E. Hall, chairman of the Northern Thames sub-provin-cial executive at it® recent meeting in Thames.
A remit requesting the imposition of heavier penalties had 'been carried by the Northern Thames executive and forwarded to the Auckland provincial executive committee for its consideration. Mr Hall informed the meeting that the view takeh .in Auckland was that the subject was bristling with, difficulties and that there was little possibility of having the law altered in such a way that an alteration would not do more harm than good 1 . No further action was taken by the meeting. The question of straying pigs was a sore point with farmers in certain areas, said Mr G. C. Donovan, of Whenuakite. Farmers who were pestered by pigs had certain rights but could only destroy trespassing pigs if the land was fenced.
,Mr L. Tye, of Ngatea, thought shooting was a drastic method of dealing with the problem. A farmer desiring to keep pigs shduld have to fence and the act should be amended to make it obligatory for a pig owner to confine his pigs upon his own land. Mr A. J. Campbell advised caution in dealing with- the matter. The question was, in his opinion, better left alone.
Mr S. E. Hall, chairman, stated that the remit opened upon a big question. The remit was lost upon a show of hands. >
