OBITUARY
“CON” MURPHY PASSES
WELL-KNOWN ON THE PLAINS
The death recently occurred of Mr C. Murphy, of Auckland, a well-known personality with a wide circle of * friends. Known affectionately to all as "old Gon, he was a familiar figure at Westfield, Pukekohe and Haurafci Plains stock sales, having been employed -by Messrs Alfred Buckland and Sons for 41 years. -Even after his retirement ip 1947, his interest continued and he was a good; judge* of horses and an authority on pork and bacon pigs. a Mr Murphy had a marveHoUs memory. He never kept /written records and could be llied upon always for this attribute. Bom in Thames on May 29, 1879, he came to Auckland in 1882, where he spent the remainder of his lifers fie became a driver df a horse wagon for the firm of Fraser and Tinney, carriers, and transferred from them to the carriers’ department of Alfred Buckland and Sons. He graduated to being yardman in the old horse bazaar, Albert street, and put his leg over many an unruly mount there. A keen follower of horse racing and living near Ellerslie racecourse, Mr Murphy saw much of the track work and Was a firm favourite among the "boys.” Since Mrs Murphy’s death a few years ago, he made his home with his son Lindsay. Others of his family are Ronald, Eileen and the late Nora, there being two grandchildren.
