HIGH JUMP RECORD

PAEROA ATHLETIC CLUB PENNELL WINS 100 YARDS JIM WILLIAMS DOES WELL (By Myles B. Hynde) Phil Pennell won the senior 100 yards very narrowly from the blind athletic, Jim Williams, at the evening meeting of the Paeroa Athletic and Cycling Club. Phil has struck form very early in the season. Jim Williams looked a winner with 5 yards'to go but he could not hold off the fast finishing Pennell. * * * * Colin Carr was in fine form to win the junior 100 yards from Lovelock and Gillespie. * * * * The ladies’ club captain, Miss J. Millar, won the 75 yards from P. French and T. Richards. The 75 yards seems to be June’s pet distance. * * * * Giff Spinks made every post a winning post in the senior 220 yards. Giff had a very handy lead into the straight and even though challenged by Richards and Packer, Giff held on to win. * * * * Colin Carr completed a fine double by winning the junior 220 yards. This athlete looks a future sprint champion. ***** Graham Jeffries was in fine form he cleared the thdgihb jump bar at Oft. Gin. This is certainly a Paeroa dub record. ; * * * * My congratulations to the Berlei relay team on turning out to defend the cup. All are hoping to see more business house relay teams in action next fortnight. ♦ * * ♦ Merv Parker, one of the children’s handicappers was noticed giving a pep talk to a small boy. To me it looked as if Merv was giving the lad some advice on starting and running straight. Good work Merv. * * * * All the starters in the cycle events were in good form. The boys/gave the crowd what we all like, good fast racing. Keep it up boys. * * * *

Next week will be great fun for the children. Santa Claus will be arriv-

ing on the ground, and all the small children will receive presents. Another big feature of the evening is that all proceeds are to be given to the Paeroa ambulance fund. Come on Paeroa folks, make this night worthwhile. * * * * How nice it wasi "with thcmusic played over the speakers. This is certainly a big improvement.
