HIS LAST MEETING
MR THORNTON RETIRES INTEREST IN PAEROA CATCHMENT BOARD MEETING The November meeting of the Hauraki Catchment Board was likely to be Mr 0. G. Thornton’s last meeting, said the chairman, Mr H. M. Corbett at that meeting. The chairman said that Mr Thornton in his position of district engineer, Hamilton, had been a member of the catchment board. He was now on the eve of his retirement from the public service. Appreciation for the assistance given the board and its staff by Mr Thornton was expressed by the chairman on behalf of board members. Following the endorsement of the chairman’s remarks by Messrs A. W. Rushton and. J. Davidson a resolution was carried embodying the opinions expressed and good wishes to Mr Thornton in his retirement. Mr Thornton in replying stated that he was most interested in Paeroa and district and the problems of the Waihou river. In that area were some of the most enteresting works he had evfer engaged in. In spite of all arguments against catchment boards they were doing good work and were in his opinion necessary as there had to be unitary control of rivers. Mr Thornton concluded by thanking members and staff for their consideration during what had been a very pleasing duty to him as a member of the Hauraki Catchment Board.
