RECORD EQUALLED
> HIGH JUMP OF 6ft. 6in. - JEFFRIES IN FORM A PAEROA PERFORMANCE The New Zealand high jump record of 6ft. "6iri. was equalled on Wednesday evening by G. H. Jeffries on the Paeroa domain, when the Paeroa Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club’s weekly sports meeting was held. Jeffries, who last year was a junior hut is now a senior, is 6ft. 4in. in ( height and is a medical student at Otago University but is at present on holiday visiting his parents at Awaiti, Paeroa. He is 21 years old and established a junior record of 6ft. in 1948. In 1949 Jeffries toured Australia with the New Zealand University team and was very successful in the hop, step and jump, event. In 1950 he failed in being placed iri the
national high '• jump championship eventbut gained third place in the hop, step and jump, his distance of 45ft. 2iin. securing his inclusion in the New Zealand Empire Games team. The New Zealand record high jump championship is held by the Australian. Olympic and Britifli Empire , champion, John Winter, wfeoreached a height, ,pf. 6ft. 6in. to win the Empire .title. . ■; ’ Jeffries has had no training as yet this season, his effort on Wednesday evening being only his second attempt at trainings Although the jump cannot be officially recognised the jump was made, under which gave > ho assistance whatever to Jeffries. It ynts an evening without any breeze.
