GUY FAWKES

REMARKABLE SUCCESS PAEROA CELEBRATION LARGE CROWD ATTENDS So successful was the Guy Fawkes celebration on Saturday night last in iPiaieraa and so spontaneous was the response of a very large and jolly crowd that the iPiaetroa Municipal Band members, who organised the function, have decided to make the event an annual one.

The band was met at the Post Office by a large crowd which, followed the players, who led the procession of guys, to the Opatito block to the strains of the “Beer Barrel” polka. Many thousands of people gathered and lined the roads surrounding the paddock where the bonfire had been built. Cars closely parked in double rows lined the roads and streets in remarkable numbers. Considering the haste with which the function was organised and the difficulties which confronted the band members in securing a suitable paddock the wholeof the proceedings were carried out in a manner which reflected very great* credit upon the members of the band and the one outside assistant, Mr W. P. Corrigan. In the paddock where the bonfirewas located were such side shows as aunt Sallies, darts, Ascot, ninepins and other such means of raising money from a crowd in happy mood. A talent quest in which quite a number took part was won by Miss D. Fisher, who yodelled cowboy songs. The winner of the Guys was Colin Fisher, whose entry was remarkably like the real. Guy Fawkes. During the proceedings rockets and other fireworks were set off which kept the interest of th,e crowd throughout the evening. 1 When interviewed this morning Mr P. Bygtnave, bandmaster, stated that, as far as could be judged, the net result of the entertainment would be a sum pf about £7O 'which would be applied to the funds for the purchase of an ambulance for Paeroa. The support which had 'been (given 'by the public was, said Mr Bygrave, far beyond what had been antidpaited and the band members had there-* fore decided to make the event an annual one and in future arrangements would be made on a fair larger and (better scale. Mir By--grave stated that the members of. the band wished to express their very great appreciation for the" excellent support which bad been given their efforts.
