FOREMAN’S REPORT

PEEBLE’S BRIDGE

COROMANDEL COUNTY COUNCIL

In reporting to the October meeting of the Coromandel County Council upon the work carried out by the council’s staff within the county during the month of September, the county foreman, Mr J. T. Hinchco, said:— “Further attention has been given to No. 309 main highway during the period. Portions of the flat on the eastern side of the range iretq'uire maintenance metal, particularly the areas where storm damage occurred. Kuaotunu: “Some consideration has been given to maintenance work during the month. The main work carried out in the district has been the repair of Peeble’s bridge and the construction of the temporary Kuaotunu bridge. The culvert at the foot of the Black Jack hill requires urgent attention, the base being scoured out under the pipes. This crossing is in danger of subsiding while in its present state of repair. Wtyitianga: “Further maintenance work has been carried out in the township area. Two blue gum stringers plus decking planks salvaged from the recently dismantled Grapevine bridge have been forwarded to Kaimarama, with a view to having repairs effected to a small bridge in that area. The hardwood planks required for the re* pairs of the wharf 'landings will be forwarded as fcoon as satisfactory transport can be arranged.

Whenuakite-Hahei: “The workman employed in this district has attended to general maintenance work. As soon as the work of dismantling a temporary bridge in this district can be carried out, it is proposed to arrange for the lifting and replacement of the small bridge on the Ferry landing road (situated near the Hahei road junction), using the materials recovered which are quite suitable and in good order. Whangapoua: “Some maintenance work has been dealt with on the hill section. Several large holes on Heenan’s hill have received attention. With reference to the prospect of renewed sea-borne freight to this port, l am of the opinion that, owing to the deteriorated condition of the present wharf structure, its use would jeopardize any immediate shipping contracts. However, a fairly economic repair or replacement scheme could- be undertaken. If desired, further suggested details of repairs, etc., could be covered in a separate report dealing with the matter, in the near future.

Kennedy bay: “The section of road between the foot of the Tokatea hill and the settlement is developing into a major undertaking, having deteriorated considerably in the past few months. The part time worker has been engaged on maintenance work.

Port Jackson-Colville: “The 7 workman employed here has directed his attention to general maintenance work.

Port Charles-Colville: “Several lorry loads of maintenance metal are required on the weak stretches of the road’s surface to prevent further damage during the wet season. Colville: “The cartage contractor has placed part of the metal from Lang’sl hili' quarry along areas 15 and 16 of this road to advantage. Colville-Coromandel: “A|? the result of recent metalling carried out on sections 12, 13 and 14 this road is at present in fair order. The workmen have been engaged on general maintenance work. Coromandel: “Some maintenance work has been given effect to on sections of No. 530 highway and area No. 11. It is desired to effect relief to areas Nos. 10 and 11 plus subsidiary reading as crushing arrangements at the quarry permit.
