A DREADFUL STATE
TO FORM WORKING BEES
CLEAN UP A CEMETERY
POSITION AT COROMANDEL
* What was referred to as the dreadful state of the Coromandel cemetery became a subject for discussion at the October meeting of the Coromandel Chamber of Commerce.
Mr H. V. Denize said that at a recent R.S.A. meeting members of the U.S.A, had decided to co-operate with members of the chamber of commerce and any other body in a large working bee to clean up the cemetery. It was realised that the council was unable to do the work but if it was cleared up then they could go to the council and ask the council to keep it clean. But, he added, on looking over the cemetery since the meeting he realised that it was a major work and he doubted whether even 50 men in several days could carry out what was required. Mr Tonkin said in other places the R.S.A. and chambers of commerce cooperated and he did not see why they should not co-operate in Coromandel. Even if they only did some of it it would be worthwhile. The price of living had gone up and it looked as though the price of dying would also go up in order to maintain the cemetery.
A sub-committee consisting of Messrs H. V. Denize, A. S. Tonkin an<J W. Preece was appointed to inspect the cemetery and see what could be done to give effect to the wishes of the R.S.A. and the chamber.
The clerk pointed out that there were three other cemeteries in the county all of a similar nature and what the council did for one it would have to do for all.
