MERCURY BAY MEETING
RESULTS OF COMSPETITIONS
The October meeting of the Mercury Bay Women’s Institute was presided over by Mrs W. Hughes, president. Birthday buttonholes were presented to Mesdames Wells and McMillan and buttonholes were also presented to three visitors.
The roll call, spring cleaning hints, was well answered. Exhibits for the Thelma Bax cup competition were on display.
Ideas for (raising for the Thames war memorial were discussed. The president reported that dressmaking classes would start in 1951 and that it would be necessary to guarantee at least 12 for a class. Those interested were asked to give their names to Mrs Sharplesc It was also reported that Mrs Bronlund and Mrs Oxley were the institute members of the beautifying society, recently formed.
An emergency remit, “That as soon as possible, hostel accommodation for boys and girls in State secondary schools should be increased considerably” was carried and sent forward to the council meeting in Thames. Three large cartons of clothes were collected for the UNICEF appeal by canvassing from house to house. Most Members were willing to pay 2/6d each towards Dominion headquarters building fund to help liquidate the debt on the building. A comedy, “Mechanical Jane,” was played by Miss Lee and M|rs Bronlund and Mrs Lee.
Competitions resulted:—Best vase: Miss Lee, 1; Mrs Clark, 2. Best bloom, Mrs Clark, 1; 'Miss Lee, 2. Best head, Mrs Bronlund, 1; Mrs Newton, 2. Crocheted medallion, Mrs Lee, 1, Pikelets, Mrs Lee, 1.
