QUESTION OF SUBSIDY

■POUARUA ROAD METALLING

REPORT TO PLAINS COUNCIL

The question of metalling Pouarua road was the subject. of a report by the county clerk, Mr L. E. Smith, to the October meeting of the Hauraki Plains 'County Council. The report read as under:

“Following instructions received at last meeting, I communicated witi? the Ministry of Works regarding the metalling of Pouarua road. “A full investigation of the matter reveals the following. A two mile stretch of this road, in an unmetalled state, was handed to the council on May 1, 1923. In 1930/31 the inital 70 chains was metalled with a grant of £440, on a £2 for £1 basis. There still remains 16 chains to be metalled and the Ministry of Works cannot consider this work on a full subsidy basis. If the council still requires me to press l for a free grant for this work, it will be necessary to approach the Lands Development Branch, but to adopt this suggestion might mean a delay of some months while the departments concerned consider the matter. A factor which will be against any application for a free grant will be the decision of the council to metal the initial 70 chains, on a £2 for £1 basis in 1930/31. I recommend the council to accept the department’s offer of May 5, 1950, for a £2 for £1 grant for the metalling of the road as from information I have received, the application would be considered very favourably, and may even be authorised this year of the council desire it. It was decided to accept the department’s offer.
