IRISHMAN’S RISE

NURSES PAY ANOMALY

THAMES BOARD PROTESTS “We have at one of our institutions a registered maternity nurse in her third year of registration drawing £225 per annum according to scale. She is going in December to take her midwifery training and for that period of six months will be receiving £240 per annum. She then returns to our institution a qualified midwife, first year, and receives £215 per annum, wrote the secretary, Thames Hospital Board, to the secretary of the Hospital Boards’ Association, Wellington, the letter being placed before the October meeting of the Thames board. “The board considers this i's just silly and considers that the minimum scale for midwives obviously too low,” continued the letter. It was pointed out the anomaly had occurred as a result iof the new salary scale for nurses pursuant to the regulations. “An Irishman’s rise,” said Mr J. W. Neate. The board approved of the letter.
