The Franklin Delano Roosevelt Library at Hyde Park in the State of New York, a unique source of American history, houses the papers of the former American president, as well as many of has personal effects and many of the gifts he received from leads of state and private citizens. The library was opened in 1941 as a museum. It has been functioning as a research centre since 1946, when the first of the Roosevelt papers were made available to qualified writers and scholars. The bulk of the remaining papers had been catalogued and were opened to scholars in March 1950. Mr Roosevelt bequeathed 33.23 acres (13.292 hectares) of land, including the library and his family home, to the U.S. Government, which maintains the area as a national historical site open to the public.
